Treating Painful Back Spasms

The “garden variety” back pain that may arise after shoveling a little too much or over-exercising is usually caused by muscle or ligament problems that are related to weakness in the lower back. The pain typically returns if the underlying weakness goes uncorrected. The acute pain is usually caused by spasm of the large supportive muscles nest to the spine, which painfully and powerfully contract. This give rise to a vicious cycle in which injury causes muscle spasms, which produce pain, which creates more muscle spasms. Severe muscle pain usually lasts from 48-72 hours, followed by days or weeks of less acute pain. The goal of chiropractic treatment is to break the cycle of pain by addressing injury-induced spinal misalignments.
